We are extremely grateful for the community of friends that we've met
along the way through these songs. Many of you have played a vital
role in inspiring us to do what we do. We've always looked for ways to
connect beyond just the songs and the shows. This is why we began
putting out a free video podcast (now 32 episodes and counting!), the daily foot photo journal, the switchfeed
news feed on our homepage, the live studio camera, and our all-new
message-board community. For us, music has always been about
communication, and keeping the dialogue going long after the guitars
have stopped ringing. In addition to all of this, many of you have
been requesting, for lack of a better term, a fan club of sorts (maybe
a "fam" club?), and after much planning and brainstorming, we are
extremely excited to bring to you "Friends of the Foot."

What this IS:

A way for us to provide something extra for those that want it -- a way
to say hi at the shows without having to wait outside the venue; a way
to see what happens on tour and in the studio on a larger scale, with
updates on an almost-daily basis; access to rare out-takes, and other
downloads that a casual listener may not appreciate. This is simply a
way to do more, without taking anything away from what we already do.

What this IS NOT:
an elite club or clique. This is not about who has and has not. This
is not about who is a real fan and who isn't. This is not a dividing
line in the middle of our great community. This is simply a way for us
to provide a higher level of content and dialogue for those who want
it.

We are extremely grateful for everyone that listens to these songs,
everyone who sings along, and everyone who believes that these tunes
could be part of a story much larger than ourselves. Whether you are a
friend of the foot, or simply a friend, we are honored to have you as part of our family.

Switchfoot Concert for the benefit of abused & exploited children

On September 10, 2007, the alternative rock band, SWITCHFOOT, will be staging a concert in Manila, the Philippines for the benefit of IJM. Proceeds of the concert will help fund the legal and educational assistance provided to more than 100 children assisted by IJM.

International Justice Mission (“IJM”) is a non-profit organization that documents and monitors conditions of abuse and oppression, educates the public about the abuses, and mobilizes intervention on behalf of the victims. Our Manila office provides free legal, investigative, and social work assistance to abused or exploited children in the National Capital Region.

The energy created when musicians exchange ideas can be extremely powerful. Just ask Switchfoot’s Tim Foreman.

When writing for his band’s latest, Oh! Gravity, Foreman found that as helpful as modern technology can be, it’s no substitute for human interaction.

“Sometimes I’ll throw skeletons of songs into Apple’s GarageBand software to work out bass parts,” Tim says. “But I can feel isolated using today’s technology. I prefer creating with all five of us together. That way you’re not working with a static set of ideas.”

Switchfoot conjured up its latest at a project studio in the hills near Foreman’s hometown of San Diego, where he and his brother, singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman, formed the contemproray Christian rock band 11 years ago.

How did you get your range of tones on the new CD?

"I played with my fingers on a Lakland Hollowbody with flatwounds to get the warm sound on some of the mellower songs, including “Yesterdays.” On others I went for more of a Paul McCartney sound by playing with a pick and putting some foam under the strings. I never used to play with a pick, but I’ve been doing it for the past few years. I use one when I want driving eighth-notes to cut through the mix. I also used my ’70s Fender Mustang Bass on a couple of songs; it sounds like a messed up Fender Precision. I used a Lakland 4-94 when I wanted a more standard rock sound.

How do you get your live sound?

My main live basses are the Decade and the Hollowbody. The Decade’s Dark Star pickups are great—they’re so even and warm. I use a Gallien-Krueger 2001RB head as a power amp for a Line 6 Bass POD. At first, I was hesitant about modeling, but the sounds I’m getting are phenomenal. I’ve customized all my tones, and I do something subtly different on almost every song. I love that it’s so easy to duplicate the same sounds every night, regardless of my stage volume.

What’s your aesthetic when it comes to tone?

I like an old SVT sound that’s fairly saturated. I tend to want a more vintage sound, as opposed to a clear, modern sound.

How has your playing progressed over time?

I’ve always been a minimalist, but I think I’ve gone even more in that direction. I try to use the least number of notes to play the most melodic part. I played things on our early records that I never would now, but there’s an innocence and freshness to that older stuff that’s still fun.

How do you try to make sure your new material sounds fresh?

This record started off when [executive producer] Steve Lillywhite heard the song “Awakening.” We went to the studio to record it while we were still on tour, and it was an eye-opening experience. Just making sure that all five of us were there together made a big difference. It allowed us to experiment without worrying about who was going to hear it, which in turn created a free-sounding record. We’re trying to do that live, too. We want to take the music seriously, but not take ourselves too seriously.

And because Switchfoot is a live band, we have to trigger everything live. That function is the one thing that I value most about my Korg gear. The new TR has it, and when I was using the TRITON Classic, it had it as well. I love it.”

How about the sounds? “Well the thing about me, ‘cause I’m old school, is I make all my own sounds. With Korg, all of the factory sounds that come with the workstations are great, but I like to manipulate the sounds to make them my own. I made a few cool pads on the TR, you know, you start with the sine wave and manipulate it. Some of the Korg effects are really cool, too, so I like to put some of them in the mix. And I like what Korg has done with their pad beds.

“I remember the T3 when it came out years ago,” continues an excited Jerome. “I was drooling over it at the music store for months thinking, ‘I have to have that keyboard because it has a sequencer built-in.’ It had the technology, the layered sounds…back then that was big!”

Getting back to his love of tweaking and genuine affinity for knobs, Jerome shares a little more insight. “Well, I grew up in an analog world, so everything I know and learned about keyboards had to do with tweaking knobs, filters and oscillators. When I saw the new Korg RADIAS it really got my juices flowing. The possibilities are endless. Obviously my sound has a lot more analog in it than your classic ‘rock’ sound, so I don’t normally use a preset sound like a piano. I have to tweak. It’s just what I do. I do use an analog keyboard live, and I’m thinking the RADIAS has a lot of versatility. I could see myself using it live. Fall tour for the band's new single, "We Are One Tonight." "This isn't
a video for the masses, MTV, or anyone else," stated the band in a
newsletter last week. "This is simply a video to thank everyone who
came to the shows this Fall for an amazing tour. I'm sure a lot of you
will even see yourselves somewhere amidst the chaos. You can watch the

Ahhh, the open road, nothing but miles of countryside as far as the eye can see, I'm going stir crazy, get me off this thing! After watching a few movies I was stoked when the bus pulled over at a gas station to refuel. One by one we were all off the bus and in the trucker gas station. Have you ever been to one of these things, it's hilarious, if you want a CB or an engine block, they probably have it. I love it, its so entertaining to walk through and see the most random stuff, and the worst, most tacky souvenirs ever invented! I ran into Jerome and he was limping around, he had sprained his ankle last night. So I asked how he was feeling and he told me it was better, just sore. After the show last night, the guys went into the dressing room and Jerome said, 'That show was awesome' and at that very moment the mirror next to him fell and shattered! Our tour manager said he thought that Switchfoot was destroying the dressing room so he was hesitant to come in. ha ha.

Switchfoot Switches into High Gear

(PRWEB) October 16, 2005 -- Switchfoot bassist Tim Foreman talks to Music Matters’ Mary Smedes Pike about touring, fame, and where the San Diego band found inspiration for their new album entitled Nothing Is Sound.

Coming off the double-platinum 2003 hit, The Beautiful Letdown, Switchfoot officially begins a new U.S. tour on October 17th after spending time in Australia and Japan. “That’s kind of been our motto on every record, to play a lot of shows. That’s what makes the band,” says Tim Foreman.

Foreman explains that this album, Switchfoot’s fifth, is a very honest collection of songs. “Hopefully there’s been some growth over the last few years, new experiences, and that comes out in the songs,” he says.

The new album is fittingly titled, Nothing is Sound, Foreman explains, “Because my career, my bass guitar, everything could break down tomorrow – and we’ve seen that happen with a number of bands – there’s not a whole lot that I can hold onto and say that is stable.”

Foreman says fame does not mean the band is any happier now then when they were “just five kids from San Diego surfing and playing music.” He says the band has come to a healthy realization when it comes to hype, “good or bad, don’t believe it.”

Jerome Fontamillas : Proud to Be Pinoy

Here is another artist that we can be proud of. Did you know that Jerome Fontamillas, Switchfoot's guitar and keyboard player is a true-blooded Filipino? His parents are both Filipino, and are supportive toward his decision to make music as his career. They even forced him to play the piano at a young age, though he didn't like it then. During high school, he started playing the bass and guitar.

Before he joined Switchfoot in 2000 as a session player on the band's independently released Learning to Breathe album, he was already in the music business playing with bands such as Fold Zandura and Mortal.

Recently, Switchfoot bagged ten CMCentral Music Awards, which included Artist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Group/Duo/Band of the Year, Christian Artist in the Mainstream, Song of the Year for "Dare You To Move," Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo/Group/Band for their song "This Is Your Life", Rock Song of the Year for "Meant To Live," Rock Performance by a Duo/Band/Group for their song "Meant To Live", Short Form Music Video of the Year for "Dare You To Move", and Long Form Music Video of the Year for their "Live in San Diego".
